As the rise in women’s health concerns affects the lives of millions of women across the UK, womb training is fast becoming an essential addition to many holistic therapy repertoires.
Preserving rituals carried through goddess temples, village grandmothers, and modern healers, womb healing weaves ceremonial and practical support to hold women in their many phases of transformation.
At the Sanctuary of Sophia, we’ve spent decades listening to the pulse of a lineage that predates books and borders. The concept of the divine feminine is central to womb training and healing, inviting us to connect with sacred feminine energy and intuition.
Today, holistic practitioners are hearing the same call we did.
Massage therapists, sound healers, and Reiki practitioners are all seeking womb healing as a service for others, and as a reclamation of the sacred feminine for themselves. Reconnecting with one’s own womb is essential for both personal transformation and effective facilitation in this work.
As more and more holistic practitioners search for womb healing, womb training, and womb healing training, we see evidence of a rising collective hunger. Many feel called to this work as part of a wider awakening, recognising the importance of healing not just individual wombs, but also contributing to collective and generational healing.
But where did this wisdom begin?
Womb training is part of a new paradigm in women’s health and spiritual practice, honouring women’s wisdom and the sacredness of the womb.

The Ancient Lineage of Womb Healing
Before we called it “womb healing,” it was simply women’s work.
In the sacred temples of Egypt, Greece, and Mesopotamia, priestesses tended to the cycles of the moon and the womb alike.
At Hathor’s temple in Dendera, women would journey for healing rites, guided by temple dancers, enchantresses, and anointers who understood the spiritual anatomy of the female body.
In Crete, Minoan goddess worship featured ecstatic movement and blood rites to honour the fertile earth and feminine mystery.
Meanwhile, across Celtic lands, village women served as midwives, bone-setters, and wise folk. They brewed mugwort for dreaming, used stones to soothe womb pain, and wrapped bellies with linen with blessings. Their tools were humble, but the work was potent: to care for the womb was to care for the soul.
What unites these traditions – whether from the Andes, the Ganges, or the Hebrides – is the understanding that the womb is not just reproductive. It is creative. It is spiritual. It holds memory, grief, and power.
The womb is honoured as a sacred womb and sacred space for healing and transformation. These traditions fostered a deep connection to the womb space and the feminine essence within each woman. And for thousands of years, women have passed down the ways of tending to it, through touch, herbs, sound, oil, and ritual.
Why Womb Healing is Rising Again
It’s no coincidence that womb healing as a search term has surged by over 250% in the past five years. Women are remembering what modern medicine often forgets: our bodies are not machines. Healing happens through deep listening, connection, and ritual care.
We’re seeing more and more practitioners reach out to us as they’re ready to expand their scope of healing. They tell us:
“I’ve trained in massage for years, but I always felt something was missing when I worked around the belly.”
“My clients keep bringing womb stories—fertility, loss, trauma. I need to know how to hold them.”
“I want to weave more meaning into my sessions. To move from practitioner to priestess.”
Womb training not only equips practitioners to support clients but also nurtures personal healing and guides both practitioners and clients through a transformative healing journey.
If you’ve felt this too, womb training may be your next step; not just professionally, but personally. Engaging in your own healing and personal healing journey through womb training can foster a deeper connection to yourself and those you serve.

The Practices We Teach at the Sanctuary of Sophia
At the Sanctuary, we don’t offer a one-size-fits-all womb healing training.
Our approach provides a strong foundation in somatic practices and embodied healing, ensuring that practitioners gain essential skills for deeper embodiment and professional growth.
Each practitioner comes with her own medicine, and our role is to offer tools, lineage, and safe space to expand it. Below are the core modalities we teach, each rooted in ancient wisdom and adapted for today’s world.
Shamanic Womb Massage
Drawing from Andean and Maya abdominal traditions, this practice works directly with the fascia, reproductive organs, and emotional body.
Through intentional touch and ritual, it helps release held trauma, stagnation, and ancestral memory in the pelvic bowl. Shamanic womb massage can be complemented by shamanic journeys and shamanic journeying, which support access to inner guidance for deep healing, transformation, and connection to the Feminine Source Self.

Crystals for Womb Healing
Crystals have long been used in temple and earth-based practices for energy healing. In womb work, they become allies, placed on or around the body to restore harmony, clear energetic blockages, and amplify intention.
Energy healers often use crystals to balance and amplify life force in the womb, supporting vitality and conception. Our womb training includes offering techniques for effective crystal use, ensuring participants learn how to harness these tools for optimal energetic healing.

Tuning Forks for Womb Healing
Sound bypasses the rational mind, travelling straight to the nervous system and energetic field. Tuning forks, when applied with precision, can help recalibrate womb energy and balance the sacral chakra.
This healing practice supports healing work by addressing both energetic and physical issues in the womb area, facilitating deeper transformation and integration. We teach both the technique and the intuitive listening it requires.

Sacred Anointing & Womb Wrapping
Both ancient and deeply personal, these practices involve oils, plant essences, and physical cocooning to restore safety, containment, and softness to the body.
The act of wrapping the womb is found in postpartum care worldwide – from Morocco to Korea – offering profound support for nervous system regulation and energetic reweaving.
These modalities are trauma-informed, supporting the healing of womb trauma by holding space for clients in a safe, nurturing environment that encourages emotional and somatic self-exploration.

Yoni Steaming
Used for centuries across continents- from Korean chayu to the Central American bajos– yoni steaming is a practice of herbal infusion and womb cleansing.
Beyond the physical, it opens a space of prayer and connection to the body’s wisdom. Yoni steaming supports the menstrual cycle, promotes womb health, and honours the journey of the sacred woman by integrating holistic healing and nurturing feminine energy.

Echoes from the Hearth: Village Women’s Womb Wisdom
Under thatched roofs and near hearth fires, grandmothers and village women carried forward womb healing as an everyday spiritual practice.
These were humble settings of kitchens, birth rooms, and shared circles; creative spaces where womb care was woven into daily life. Group sessions were integral to fostering community, shared healing, and deep connection among women.
In Central America, Mayan midwives offered bajos – yoni steams with local herbs – within days of childbirth and across women’s lives, revered for their capacity to ease menstruation, relieve pelvic tension, and restore balance.
Often done four times a year “just before menstruation” when the womb desired gentle support, this practice gave women autonomy over their cycles without the need for clinics or prescriptions.
In the Korean peninsula, the tradition of chai-yok blended herbal incense and steam in postpartum care circles, though, as one historian noted, often the practice was less formalised than modern trends suggest.
Still, women passed herbs like Mugwort and wormwood across generations “Add a handful of this,” “Sit a little longer on cold nights.”
Across rural Africa, steaming containing essential oils and medicinal plants was woven into communal rites, where young women graduated into fertility ceremonies, and elders supported the transition with ritual baths and congealing peels of womb balm.
This lineage survived centuries of colonisation, war, and scientific erasure. When herbs met steam, tensions eased; when hands massaged womb bows, circulation & courage returned.

Yoni Steaming: Science, Story, and Soul
Yoni steaming is among the most globally recognised of womb rituals today, but it carries complexity.
Some mainstream doctors warn of burns, infections, or unnatural disruption of vaginal flora, yet many cultures maintain its sacred use where herbal selections and temperature are carefully calibrated.
Herbalists share cautionary wisdom: never steam during pregnancy, avoid overly hot steam, stop if something doesn’t feel right – honoring old women’s rules about listening to the body first.
These safety guidelines echo centuries of respect—rose petals cool in warm water, mugwort warms but never scorches, timing lines up with moon, cycles, and seasons. Yoni steaming encourages self-awareness and attunement to one’s needs, inviting practitioners to notice subtle shifts and connect more deeply with their bodies.
While large-scale scientific trials are limited, anthropologists note yoni steaming’s consistent presence across cultures – from Africa to Asia, the Americas to Polynesia.
The Temple Within: Yoni and Womb as Sacred Archives
In Sanskrit, the word yoni itself is ancient; a symbol of the womb as both origin and cosmic sanctuary. Iconographic worship dates back to 4,000 BCE, used in temples like Kamakhya in India.
It represents not only the physical form but the creative, generative feminine force—expression, birth, transformation, and the embodiment of feminine energy.
In Hindu Tantra, yoni and lingam icons co-mingle, expressing creation itself, not sexuality alone. That cosmic reverence is the entangled soil from which our modern womb healing practices grow—not spiritual bypass, but spiritual gravity.
These practices help women connect with their inner wisdom and feminine energy, facilitating access to deeper intuitive knowledge and the sacred womb within.
The Sanctuary’s womb trainings call upon this earth-rooted understanding.
