Womb healing is a term you may have come across increasingly in women’s wellbeing, complementary therapy and spiritual practice. But what does it actually mean?
At the Sanctuary of Sophia, womb healing is not one single technique or treatment. It is an umbrella term for a range of womb-centred practices that invite a woman to reconnect with her womb and pelvic space through bodywork, breath, sound, crystals, ceremony, guided journeying and other forms of embodied practice.
For some women, that relationship begins with the physical body. For others it may be emotional, creative, ancestral or spiritual.
And you do not need to have a physical womb to explore womb-centred practice. Women who have experienced hysterectomy, menopause, pregnancy loss or other changes to the reproductive body can still choose to work with their relationship to this part of themselves.
What happens during a womb healing session?
There is no single formula.
At the Sanctuary of Sophia, all of our womb healing sessions are two hours and bespoke. Rather than expecting every woman to fit into the same treatment, the session is shaped around the woman who arrives and what she needs on that particular day.
This may include conversation and intention-setting, bodywork, breath, sound, crystals, guided shamanic journeying, ceremony or simply space to slow down and reconnect with the body.
The work is held within clear boundaries around consent and choice. Nothing should be done to a woman. She remains an active participant in her own experience.
Shamanic Womb Massage
Shamanic Womb Massage is external bodywork.
Massage may include work over the abdomen, womb and ovarian areas, alongside the back of the body around the sacrum and hips.
It brings together therapeutic touch with a wider womb-centred approach, allowing time for a woman to become more aware of her body and her relationship with her pelvic and womb space.
There is no internal vaginal massage within Shamanic Womb Massage.

Womb Healing with Tuning Forks

Womb Healing with tuning forks, working with sound and vibration over the womb and pelvic space.
Womb Healing with Tuning Forks
Sound is another way we can work with the womb and pelvic space. At the Sanctuary of Sophia we use a set of eight tuning forks, each attuned to one of the eight Womb Gates within the Shamanic Way of the Womb® Medicine Wheel.
The forks are worked with on and around the body, bringing sound and vibration into the different Womb Gates. Each gate holds its own teachings and themes, and the tuning forks can be woven into a wider womb healing session alongside touch, breath, guided journeying, crystals and ceremony.
For me, this is not about using sound to “fix” the body. It is another way of listening and working with the whole woman — physical, emotional, energetic and spiritual.
Crystal Healing for the Womb

Exploring Crystal Healing for the Womb through the Shamanic Way of the Womb® Medicine Wheel.
Crystal healing is another strand of our womb-centred work at the Sanctuary of Sophia.
Rather than simply choosing crystals because they are traditionally associated with women or the womb, we work through the Shamanic Way of the Womb® Medicine Wheel, using specific crystals in relationship with the Eight Womb Gates.
Each Womb Gate has its own themes, teachings and qualities, and the crystals become part of a much wider practice of intention, embodied awareness, ceremony and connection.
As with all of our womb healing modalities, this is not about the crystal doing the healing to a woman. It is about creating a space in which she can slow down, listen to her body and explore what is present for her.
The Womb, the Motherline & Inherited Experience
For many women, womb work also opens a doorway into exploring the motherline …. the women who came before us and the stories, experiences and patterns that have travelled through our families.
We may begin to recognise repeating patterns around relationships, motherhood, sexuality, safety, grief, silence, shame or the female body itself. Sometimes we know exactly where those patterns began; sometimes we simply recognise that something feels much older than our own individual story.
Modern research into epigenetics has explored how experiences and environmental influences can affect gene expression, including research into possible effects across generations. This is a complex and developing area of science, and it does not mean that specific memories or traumatic experiences are literally stored in the cells of the womb.
Within our shamanic and ceremonial work, however, we can explore the motherline in a different way.
Through guided shamanic journeying, ceremony, embodied practices and deep listening, we create a held space in which a woman can explore what she feels she carries, what belongs to her, what may have been inherited through family patterns, and what she may be ready to meet differently.
This isn’t about blaming our mothers or the women who came before us. It is about becoming curious about the threads that have shaped us, and recognising that we have choices about the threads we continue to weave.

Is Womb Healing Therapy?
Womb healing can be deeply therapeutic, but it is important to be clear about what this work is, and what it is not.
Complementary womb healing is not a replacement for medical care, psychotherapy or specialist pelvic health support. If a woman is experiencing persistent pelvic pain, unusual bleeding, changes in her menstrual cycle or anything else that concerns her, we will always encourage her to seek appropriate medical advice.
The same is true when we are working with trauma. Womb work can sometimes bring emotions, memories and experiences to the surface, which is why the way we hold this work matters so much.
For me, being trauma informed means working with choice, consent, boundaries, pacing and bodily autonomy. It means listening to the woman in front of us rather than deciding what we think she needs.
A womb healing practitioner is not there to diagnose, to interpret somebody else’s experience for them, or to push a woman into a process she isn’t ready for.
We create the space ….. and we listen.
Why Are Women Drawn to Womb-Centred Practices?
There isn’t one answer to this, and every woman arrives at this work with her own story.
Some women come because they feel disconnected from their womb or their body. Others find their way here during times of transition, perhaps through menstruation, fertility, pregnancy, motherhood, loss, perimenopause or menopause.
Some are exploring their relationship with sexuality, creativity or the motherline. Others simply have a sense that there is something calling them to come home to this part of themselves.
And sometimes there is no big story at all ….. just curiosity.
One of the things I feel most strongly about is that we don’t have to wait until something is wrong before we develop a relationship with our womb and pelvic space.
Womb-centred practice can simply offer us an opportunity to slow down, listen to our bodies and become curious about what we find there.
Womb Healing at the Sanctuary of Sophia
Womb healing at the Sanctuary is not one technique. It is a body of work that has developed over many years, bringing together touch, sound, crystals, herbs, ceremony, embodied practice and the wisdom that emerges when women gather and learn together.
Our womb-centred modalities include Shamanic Womb Massage, Womb Healing with Tuning Forks, Crystal Healing for the Womb, Womb Wrapping, Yoni Steaming and Sacred Anointing, alongside the wider teachings of the Shamanic Way of the Womb®.
Some women come to experience this work for themselves. Others feel called to go deeper and train professionally, bringing womb-centred practices into the work they already offer, or beginning an entirely new path.
Whichever doorway brings you here, the foundations remain the same ….. the body, consent, curiosity, deep listening and respect for the woman in front of us.

Explore Womb Healing with the Sanctuary of Sophia
If something in this has stirred your curiosity, there are many ways to explore womb-centred work with us.
You may feel called to experience a two-hour bespoke womb healing session, where the work is shaped around you and what you are bringing on the day.
Or perhaps you are already a therapist, healer or practitioner and feel drawn to bring womb-centred practices into your own work. The Sanctuary of Sophia offers professional training in a range of womb healing modalities, as well as the deeper year-long journey of the Shamanic Way of the Womb® Apprenticeship.
You don’t need to know where the path will lead before you begin.
Sometimes the first step is simply becoming curious ….. and listening to what your body is asking you to notice.
